lightning is new to us

The KZN MEC for "co-operative governance" (perhaps that should read MEC for the Dept of Stupidity instead), Nomsa Dube on Monday called for an investigation into the causes of lightning.

The last few months have been a bit hectic, and as such I haven't had much time to put mouse to photoshop canvas and draw cartoons. However, after reading this story I just couldn't resist. So herewith the year's first cartoon.

My brother Marcel highlighted this story on Facebook, and at first I thought it was a joke. However, after some investigation I discovered that it is true. Sadly. Every bit. After a very tragic event saw a number of people killed by a lightning strike, the esteemed MEC Dube told a media briefing that the department will approach the department of Science and Technology to investigate the causes of lightning. So, a Malema moment if ever there was one. But wait.... there is (somehow) more. Mrs Dube told the media briefing that the "department has dealt with floods and fires, but lightning was new to us". New to you? Perhaps Mrs Dube is smoking a bit too much of the Durban herb her province is famous for, but I'm pretty sure that even people from Durban have known about lightning long before the dawn of 2011.

The best, however, is yet to come. Mrs Dube figures the department of science and technology could come up with a solution to this new problem now called lightning. I am willing to put a tenner on the department doing any of (if not all three) the following three things:

  1. point, stare, and then laugh uncontrollably at her.

  2. poke her with a lightning rod

  3. slap her

How do people like this even make it into government?

P.S. Happy new year to everyone! I hope it will be an awesome year for you. For me it already is!

P.P.S. To all the families that have lost someone in this most tragic way, my deepest sympathies. And to all those families that are now going to meet this woman in lieu of this tragedy, my most sincere condolences.

I don't remember the article too well but I do remember thinking the same thing until actually reading it. Now I believe that the only stupid thing the minister is guilty of is being unclear. I believe she wants the Department of Sci & Tech to investigate why the effects of the lightning were so severe and what they can do to lesson this in future... eg. lightning rods, educating the community on best practices during a lightning storm(avoid open fields, cowering under trees, open windows, etc.)
This isn't as silly as the article makes it sound if you think about it.
