re-tweet: I'm going to take a dump

The world is going nuts. I am convinced of it...
There was a time when people valued their privacy, that they chose to remain largely anonymous through their activities and interactions with people. People communicated face to face, knowing exactly where personal privacy boundaries were drawn.

But how things have changed... I have noted over recent times that people don't care about privacy anymore. There exists among us millions upon millions of sheep (relax all you Aussies and New Zealanders, I'm talking metaphorically here) that have chosen to live their lives entirely through twitter or facebook. It's as if there is some weird social experiment going on that the creators of these (and the other billions of social networking sites) are conducting. The strange bit is how people are flocking to these services to tell the world what they're doing every minute of the day. It's as if they actually believe that the world cares.

Don't get me wrong, social networking sites like twitter and facebook have their uses (and I am well aware of the marketing usefulness of these sites), but were they really intended for this level of abuse? It just irks me to know that at any moment in time I could receive a "retweet" from someone that some chick called Minnie_ME_x declaring "In bed all comfy and I need to pee SMH". I don't really know which bit is worse - the fact that this girl took the time to WRITE this on twitter (via her blackberry), or that someone actually had the audacity to retweet it.

If this were a unique, once off incident, I'd actually just ignore it, but it's not. A twitter bot (some piece of automated software that replies to twits' tweets) has actually been created to respond to people who feel the need to tell the planet that they are about to dispose of some liquids or solids. The bot, aptly called toiletbot (http://twitter.com/toiletbot) responds to each tweeting twit to "don't forget to wash your hands ;) #nothingpersonal".

Seriously? WTF!

The problem is not that too many share, the problem is that some have nothing to share really :P
